New Years Day Record Heat
~ Record breaking temperatures were observed throughout much of Eastern NSW. The Hunter recorded it's
highest ever temperature at Singleton with 45.9°C. The previous high of 45.6°C was held by Jerrys Plains
on 25/12/1957. Unfortunately this station did not record data on this day.
Moderate NW winds carried this heat from NW NSW & SW QLD. It was possible to pick that we were going
to be in for a hot day the night before with the very warn overnight temperatures in higher elevations. For
example, Murrurundi Gap in the NW hunter at 729.4m asl observed a temperature of 27.3°C at 2am!!!
~ On a rainfall note for January I noticed that many surrounding areas to us here recorded totals well in excess
of 100mm (some centres even being from the Hunter).
